The book “The Paleo Diet for Athletes,” which was written by Dr. Loren Cordain, Ph.D., is a variant of the original Paleo diet. The Paleo diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that has gained popularity for its effectiveness in the past years.

This phase consists of a carbohydrate source that is low in fiber. This carbohydrate source is to be consumed 1 hour – 2 hours prior to competition, exercise or training. Proteins and fats may also be incorporated. Phase two is eating throughout competition, exercise or training. These carbohydrates are to be consumed, principally in liquid form. Sports beverages are permitted during competition, exercise or training to meet this requisite. In phase three, immediately after competition, exercise or training a recovery beverage with protein and carbohydrates is suggested within 30 minutes following. Phase four is consisting of eating for extended recovery. During this phase, non-optimal foods like bread, pasta and rice are suggested, along with additional protein. Phase five, eating for recovery long-term, is the last and final phase. At this time, you are eating foods according to the original Paleo diet’s guiding principle.
