The Paleo Diet is one of the newest diet concepts to gain popularity. It has been referred to as the Caveman Diet and the Hunter Gatherer Diet, and the concept is very simple: eat like our ancestors as much as possible. This means the food is taken in a very natural form. Another benefit is that the food will be gluten-free.
Followers of the Paleo diet eat as much as they would like of poultry, fish, red meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables. These foods are considered nutrient dense, as they contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals. For fats, the diet focuses on avocado, coconut and nuts. The foods that are off limits include grains, beans and legumes, dairy products, salt, processed oils and refined sugar. These foods were introduced duing the farming times, and are not as easily broken down by the human body, according to Paleo Diet followers.
Proponents of the Paleo Diet cite the benefits as:
reducing inflammation in the body
increasing energy levels
maintaining a healthy metabolic rate
minimizing risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes
The diet proposes a meal plan that is high in natural foods and removes all processed foods. See the Paleo Pyramid and an example of a Paleo diet menu below.
